Alfred Tennyson: The Lotos Eaters Bangla Summary 

The Lotos-Eaters is a poem by Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, published in Tennyson's 1832 poetry collection. It was inspired by his trip to Spain with his close friend Arthur Hallam, where they visited the Pyrenees mountains. 

অ্যালফ্রেড, লর্ড টেনিসনের লেখা The Lotos-Eaters কবিতাটি গ্রিক মহাকাব্য Homer’s Odyssey থেকে অনুপ্রাণিত। এতে ওডিসিয়াস (Ulysses) এবং তার নাবিকদের এক রহস্যময় দ্বীপে পৌঁছানোর কাহিনি বলা হয়েছে, যেখানে অধিবাসীরা একধরনের যাদুকরী "লোটাস" ফল খায়। এই ফল খাওয়ার পর, ওডিসিয়াসের নাবিকরা অলসতা ও স্বপ্নময় উদাসীনতায় নিমগ্ন হয়ে পড়ে এবং স্বদেশে ফিরে যাওয়ার ইচ্ছা হারিয়ে ফেলে। কবিতাটি পালানোর আকাঙ্ক্ষা (escapism), জীবনের কঠিন বাস্তবতা, এবং চিরস্থায়ী বিশ্রামের লোভ সম্পর্কে গভীরভাবে আলোচনা করে।

 লোটাস ফল ও তার প্রভাব

দ্বীপের বাসিন্দারা ওডিসিয়াসের নাবিকদের লোটাস ফল খেতে দেয়। এই ফল খাওয়ার সাথে সাথেই নাবিকদের মধ্যে এক অলৌকিক পরিবর্তন আসে।

 নাবিকদের গান (Choric Song)

কবিতার অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ হল নাবিকদের সম্মিলিত গান, যেখানে তারা জীবনের ক্লান্তি ও অবসাদ প্রকাশ করে এবং দ্বীপে স্থায়ীভাবে থেকে যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্তকে সমর্থন করে।

 জীবনের ক্লান্তি

নাবিকরা জানায় যে তাদের জীবন পরিশ্রম ও দুর্ভোগে ভরা। তারা ঝড়ের মধ্যে যুদ্ধ করেছে, প্রচণ্ড পরিশ্রম করেছে, কিন্তু এখন তারা শান্তি চায়। প্রকৃতির সব কিছুই তো বিনা পরিশ্রমে বেঁচে থাকে, তাহলে তারা কেন কষ্ট করবে?

পরিশ্রমের অসারতা

তারা ভাবে, জীবন তো শেষ পর্যন্ত মৃত্যুতে গিয়ে শেষ হবে। তাহলে কেন এত কষ্ট করা? তারা মনে করে, বিশ্রামই প্রকৃত মুক্তি।

 চিরন্তন ঘুমের আকর্ষণ

নাবিকরা বিশ্বাস করে, এই দ্বীপ যেন স্বর্গের মতো, যেখানে দুঃখ নেই, দায়িত্ব নেই, এবং সব কিছুই শান্ত।

 দেবতা ও নিয়তি

তারা যুক্তি দেখায়, দেবতারা তো কোন পরিশ্রম করেন না—তারা চিরশান্তিতে বাস করেন। তাহলে কেন মানুষকে কষ্ট পেতে হবে?

দ্বীপে থাকার সিদ্ধান্ত

শেষ পর্যন্ত নাবিকরা সিদ্ধান্ত নেয় যে তারা আর কখনো স্বদেশে ফিরে যাবে না। তারা দ্বীপের শান্তি গ্রহণ করবে এবং তাদের পুরনো জীবনকে ভুলে যাবে।

যে হৃদয় বহু যুদ্ধের ক্লান্তিতে জীর্ণ, তার জন্য এটা এক দুর্বিষহ কাজ।

But, propt on beds of amaranth and moly,
কিন্তু, অমরনাথ ফুল ও মোলির বিছানায় হেলান দিয়ে,

How sweet (while warm airs lull us, blowing lowly)
কী মধুর (যখন গরম বাতাস আমাদের আলতোভাবে দোলায়),

With half-dropt eyelid still,
অর্ধ-বন্ধ চোখের নিস্তব্ধতায়,

Beneath a heaven dark and holy,
পবিত্র ও অন্ধকার আকাশের নিচে,

To watch the long bright river drawing slowly
লম্বা উজ্জ্বল নদীকে ধীরে ধীরে প্রবাহিত হতে দেখা,

His waters from the purple hill—
যার জল প্রবাহিত হচ্ছে বেগুনি পাহাড় থেকে—

To hear the dewy echoes calling
শুনতে পাওয়া শিশির ভেজা প্রতিধ্বনি ডাকছে,

From cave to cave thro' the thick-twined vine—
গুহা থেকে গুহায়, ঘন বুনো লতার মধ্য দিয়ে—

To watch the emerald-colour'd water falling
সবুজ পানির ঝরনা ঝরতে দেখা,

Thro' many a wov'n acanthus-wreath divine!
অসংখ্য সোনালি আকন্থাস ফুলের বুনন ভেদ করে!

Only to hear and see the far-off sparkling brine,
শুধু দূরের ঝিকিমিকি করা লবণাক্ত পানি দেখা আর শোনা,

Only to hear were sweet, stretch'd out beneath the pine.
শুধু শোনাই মধুর, পাইন গাছের নিচে শুয়ে থাকা।

VIII

The Lotos blooms below the barren peak:
লোটাস ফুল ফোটে শুষ্ক পাহাড়ের নিচে,

The Lotos blows by every winding creek:
লোটাস ফুল ফোটে প্রতিটি সর্পিল খালের ধারে,

All day the wind breathes low with mellower tone:
সারা দিন বাতাস মৃদু সুরে বয়ে চলে,

Thro' every hollow cave and alley lone
প্রতিটি ফাঁপা গুহা ও নির্জন গলির মধ্যে দিয়ে,

Round and round the spicy downs the yellow Lotos-dust is blown.
চারদিকে সুগন্ধি পাহাড়ে উড়ে বেড়ায় হলুদ লোটাসের পরাগ।

We have had enough of action, and of motion we,
আমরা যথেষ্ট কাজ করেছি, যথেষ্ট চলাফেরা করেছি,

Roll'd to starboard, roll'd to larboard, when the surge was seething free,
ডান দিকে গেছি, বাম দিকে গেছি, যখন ঢেউ উত্তাল ছিল,

Where the wallowing monster spouted his foam-fountains in the sea.
যেখানে বিশাল দানব তার ফেনার ঝরনা ছুড়ে দিয়েছিল সমুদ্রে।

Let us swear an oath, and keep it with an equal mind,
আসুন, আমরা একটি শপথ করি, এবং তা সমানভাবে মেনে চলি,

In the hollow Lotos-land to live and lie reclined
এই শূন্য লোটাসভূমিতে বাস করব, শুয়ে থাকব,

On the hills like Gods together, careless of mankind.
পাহাড়ের ওপরে দেবতাদের মতো, মানবজাতিকে উপেক্ষা করে।

For they lie beside their nectar, and the bolts are hurl'd
কারণ তারা তাদের অমৃতের পাশে শুয়ে থাকে, আর বজ্রপাত পড়ে

Far below them in the valleys, and the clouds are lightly curl'd
তাদের অনেক নিচে উপত্যকায়, আর মেঘেরা আলতো করে পাক খায়

Round their golden houses, girdled with the gleaming world:
তাদের সোনার বাড়িগুলোর চারপাশে, যা জ্বলজ্বল করা পৃথিবীর মালায় বেষ্টিত।

Where they smile in secret, looking over wasted lands,
যেখানে তারা গোপনে হাসে, ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত ভূমিগুলোর দিকে তাকিয়ে,

Blight and famine, plague and earthquake, roaring deeps and fiery sands,
দুর্ভিক্ষ আর মহামারী, ভূমিকম্প, গর্জে ওঠা সাগর আর জ্বলন্ত মরুভূমির দিকে তাকিয়ে,

Clanging fights, and flaming towns, and sinking ships, and praying hands.
সংঘর্ষের শব্দ, জ্বলন্ত শহর, ডুবতে থাকা জাহাজ আর প্রার্থনাময় হাতের দিকে তাকিয়ে।

But they smile, they find a music centred in a doleful song
তবে তারা হাসে, তারা এক বিষাদময় গানের মধ্যে সুর খুঁজে পায়,

Steaming up, a lamentation and an ancient tale of wrong,
উঠে আসে এক দীর্ঘশ্বাস, এক প্রাচীন অন্যায়ের কাহিনি,

Like a tale of little meaning tho' the words are strong;
যেন এক অর্থহীন গল্প, যদিও তার শব্দগুলো শক্তিশালী;

Chanted from an ill-used race of men that cleave the soil,
যে মানুষরা জমি চষে, অথচ সবসময় অবহেলিত, তাদের গলায় সেই গান উঠে আসে,

Sow the seed, and reap the harvest with enduring toil,
যারা বীজ বোনে, ফসল কাটে, অবিরাম পরিশ্রম করে,

Storing yearly little dues of wheat, and wine and oil;
যারা বছরে সামান্য পরিমাণ গম, মদ, আর তেলের ভাণ্ডার জমায়;

Till they perish and they suffer—some, 'tis whisper'd—down in hell
যতক্ষণ না তারা ধ্বংস হয়ে যায়, কষ্ট পায়— কেউ কেউ, শোনা যায়, নরকে যায়,

Suffer endless anguish, others in Elysian valleys dwell,
নিরন্তর যন্ত্রণা ভোগ করে, আবার কেউ কেউ ইলিশিয়ামের উপত্যকায় বসবাস করে,

Resting weary limbs at last on beds of asphodel.
অবশেষে ক্লান্ত শরীর রাখে অ্যাসফোডেল ফুলের বিছানায়।

Surely, surely, slumber is more sweet than toil, the shore
নিশ্চয়ই, নিশ্চয়ই, ঘুম পরিশ্রমের চেয়ে মধুর, তীরের বিশ্রাম

Than labour in the deep mid-ocean, wind and wave and oar;
গভীর সমুদ্রে পরিশ্রম করার চেয়ে মধুর, যেখানে বাতাস, ঢেউ আর বৈঠা চালাতে হয়;

O, rest ye, brother mariners, we will not wander more.
ওহ, বিশ্রাম নাও, ভাই নাবিকেরা, আমরা আর কখনো ঘুরে বেড়াব না।

এটি মূলত ক্লান্ত নাবিকদের চূড়ান্ত সিদ্ধান্ত— তারা আর ফিরে যেতে চায় না। তারা লোটাসভূমিতে চিরকাল বিশ্রাম নিতে চায়, যেখানে পরিশ্রম নেই, যুদ্ধ নেই, কেবল শান্তি আর স্বপ্নময় জীবন।
